Dr Ekta Singh

Dr. Ekta Singh is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Earth Sciences at IIT Roorkee, with a research interest in archaeology, history, and Himalayan studies. She holds a PhD in Archaeology from HNB Garhwal University, where her research focused on the archaeology of Spiti Valley. Her interests include pre-Buddhist cultures, burial traditions, lithic tools, rock art, and Trans-Himalayan archaeological connections. Through interdisciplinary research and fieldwork, she contributes to understanding the region’s cultural and environmental heritage.

Silent Storytellers: Spiti Valley’s Rock Art

Spiti Valley holds an extraordinary open-air gallery of rock art, spread from Kunzum La to Sumdo and beyond into Kinnaur. Petroglyphs depict ibexes, blue sheep, hunters, horse riders, dogs, yaks, and even animals from distant landscapes. Alongside hunting scenes are celestial symbols, swastikas, geometric motifs, handprints, and later Buddhist inscriptions, revealing centuries of cultural interaction across the Trans-Himalayan region.
